Colonoscopy: preparation and practicalities

In a colonoscopy the whole large intestine is examined with an endoscope passed through the anus. It is ordered for example for blood in the stool, changed bowel habits or a raised risk of bowel cancer. A colonoscopy is done for example for blood in the stool, a positive faecal blood test, long-lasting diarrhoea, a change in bowel habits or to follow up polyps.

How do I prepare?

  • The bowel is emptied before the procedure with a laxative from the pharmacy, as the unit instructs. Good cleansing is needed for a successful examination.
  • For example the Ostrobothnia wellbeing services county instructs pausing iron tablets and fibre supplements for a week and switching to a low-fibre diet a few days before.
  • Tell the unit in advance about blood thinners and diabetes medicines.
  • If you get a sedative, you must not drive that day.

What happens during the examination?

The procedure usually takes 20–40 minutes, and you can get pain relief or a sedative. Polyps can be removed and biopsies taken at the same time.

Do I need a referral?

You are usually referred by a gastroenterologist, surgeon or general practitioner. Some providers also accept self-paying patients without a referral.

When do I get the results?

Visible findings are told right after the procedure. Results of biopsies and removed polyps come later, often within 1–2 weeks.

How much does it cost?

The lowest price in 3 providers' price lists is from €849.90 (Pihlajalinna), the highest €1,192.90.
