Gastroscopy: preparation and practicalities
In a gastroscopy the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum are examined with a thin endoscope passed through the mouth. It is ordered for example to investigate long-lasting upper abdominal symptoms, reflux or anaemia. A gastroscopy is done for example for long-lasting upper abdominal pain or heartburn, difficulty swallowing, iron deficiency anaemia or suspected coeliac disease.

How do I prepare?
- Come without eating: for example the South Karelia wellbeing services county instructs at least 6 hours without food and 2 hours without drinking or smoking. Follow your own unit's instructions, as times vary.
- Tell the unit in advance about blood thinners and diabetes medicines; pausing them is agreed separately.
- If you get a sedative, you must not drive that day. Arrange your trip home in advance.
What happens during the examination?
Your throat is numbed with a spray, and you can get a sedative if needed. The examination usually takes 5–15 minutes. Biopsies can be taken at the same time, for example to test for Helicobacter.
Do I need a referral?
Some providers accept self-paying patients for a gastroscopy without a referral, but often you first see a gastroenterologist or general practitioner. The procedure is usually done by a gastroenterologist or surgeon.
When do I get the results?
The examiner tells you the visible findings right after the procedure. Biopsy results come later, often within 1–2 weeks.
How much does it cost?
The lowest price in 3 providers' price lists is from €631.90 (Pihlajalinna), the highest €903.90.
