PSA (prostate test): preparation and practicalities
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a prostate marker. It is used to investigate and follow prostate conditions; a raised value alone does not mean cancer. PSA is measured for example for urinary symptoms, when prostate cancer runs in the family, or to follow up an earlier abnormal value.

How do I prepare?
- Book a laboratory appointment or check whether the site takes samples without one.
- Follow the laboratory's instructions: some tests are taken in the morning or after fasting.
- Avoid ejaculation and vigorous exercise such as cycling for two days before the test, as they can raise PSA temporarily.
- Do not take the test during or right after a urinary tract infection or prostatitis.
What happens during the examination?
The sample is usually taken from a vein in the crook of the arm. It takes a few minutes.
Do I need a referral?
As a self-paying patient you can go to a private laboratory without a referral. Tests taken without a referral are not reimbursed by Kela. The laboratory may charge a sample-taking fee on top of the test price.
When do I get the results?
Results are usually ready the same or the next working day and appear in the provider's app or My Kanta. It is worth going through them with a doctor.
How much does it cost?
The lowest price in 4 providers' price lists is €69.00 (Terveystalo), the highest €118.10.
