When is PSA measured?
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein made by the prostate. The upper reference limit rises with age: under 2.5 µg/l under 50, under 3.5 at 50–59, under 4.5 at 60–69 and under 6.5 µg/l over 69.
PSA can rise for reasons other than cancer, for example prostate enlargement, inflammation, urinary retention, recent ejaculation, cycling or a prostate examination. A single measurement is not enough to assess cancer risk, so go through the result with a doctor.
PSA is measured for example for urinary symptoms, when prostate cancer runs in the family, or to follow up an earlier abnormal value.

What can raise the PSA value?
For example prostate enlargement, inflammation, recent ejaculation, cycling or a prostate examination. That is why they are worth avoiding for a couple of days before the sample, and a single raised value is rechecked.
Do I need a referral for a lab test?
As a self-paying patient you can go to a private laboratory without a referral. Tests taken without a referral are not reimbursed by Kela. It is worth going through the results with a doctor.
