When is a basic blood count taken?
A basic blood count (B-PVK+T) is the most common blood test. It includes red blood cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit, red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW), white blood cells and platelets. A white cell differential is not part of it and is ordered separately.
You do not need to fast for a basic blood count, and the results are usually ready the same day.
A basic blood count is taken for example for tiredness, suspected anaemia, infections or as part of a general health check.
