When is CRP measured?
CRP (C-reactive protein) is a protein made by the liver; its level in the blood rises within 6–12 hours of inflammation or tissue damage starting. In bacterial infections CRP usually rises much higher (often over 100 mg/l) than in viral infections (a few tens).
The reference value is under 4 mg/l. No fasting is needed.
CRP is measured for example to assess the cause of a fever or another infection, to follow an inflammatory disease or to assess the need for antibiotics.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the cheapest CRP (inflammation marker)?
The cheapest price in the comparison is at Terveystalo, €49.00 including fees. Others: Pihlajalinna €53.80, Mehiläinen €56.90, Aava €76.10. Prices from public price lists, checked 16/10/2026; check the final price when booking.
What does a high CRP mean?
A high CRP shows inflammation or tissue damage in the body, but not its cause. In bacterial infections the value usually rises higher than in viral infections. The result is always interpreted together with the symptoms.
Do I need a referral for a lab test?
As a self-paying patient you can go to a private laboratory without a referral. Tests taken without a referral are not reimbursed by Kela. It is worth going through the results with a doctor.
