When is cholesterol measured?
A cholesterol test measures total cholesterol in the blood, and HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are almost always measured from the same sample. The population target for adults is total cholesterol under 5.0 mmol/l; target values are used instead of reference values.
Fasting is usually not needed. If the doctor asks for a fasting sample, the test is abbreviated fP-Kol.
Cholesterol is measured for example to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease, when heart disease runs in the family, or to follow cholesterol medication.
