When is a chest X-ray needed?
A chest X-ray is the most common X-ray examination: about half a million chest X-rays are taken in Finland every year. It takes 5–10 minutes and needs no preparation. Pneumonia is usually confirmed with a chest X-ray.
X-ray examinations give each Finn an average of about 0.7 mSv a year, out of an average of 5.9 mSv from all radiation. All providers in the comparison require a doctor's referral for an X-ray.
A chest X-ray is done for example when pneumonia is suspected, for a long-lasting cough or shortness of breath, or as a follow-up after pneumonia for smokers.
