When is a knee X-ray needed?
A knee X-ray is the basic examination for fractures and osteoarthritis. For osteoarthritis, the Current Care Guideline says the knees are imaged standing, both knees in the same image, slightly bent.
An X-ray shows the bones and narrowing of the joint space, but not the menisci, ligaments or early cartilage damage; these are examined with MRI. The radiation dose from imaging a limb is very small. An X-ray needs a doctor's referral.
A knee X-ray is done for example after a fall or an injury to rule out a fracture, or for long-lasting knee pain that gets worse with strain when osteoarthritis is suspected.
