When is a thyroid ultrasound needed?
A thyroid ultrasound is the first-line examination for a thyroid nodule. It can reliably tell benign nodules from suspicious ones, and a fine-needle sample can be taken at the same time. About 5 % of nodules are cancers.
Thyroid function is not assessed with ultrasound but with blood tests (TSH and free T4). Most providers require a doctor's referral for an ultrasound.
A thyroid ultrasound is done for example for a lump felt in the neck, an enlarged thyroid (goitre) or to follow up a nodule found earlier.
