When to see a gastroenterologist?

A gastroenterologist is a doctor specialised in diseases of the digestive tract. They treat for example reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases, and often do gastroscopies and colonoscopies themselves.

The basic examination for reflux disease is gastroscopy. Irritable bowel syndrome can be diagnosed without an endoscopy if the symptoms are long-standing and there are no alarm symptoms.

People see a gastroenterologist for example for long-lasting heartburn, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, blood in the stool or to assess the need for an endoscopy.
