When to see a paediatrician?

A paediatrician is a doctor specialised in the illnesses of children and young people. They treat infections, allergies, asthma and eczema and assess growth and development.

Children under school age have on average 6–8 colds a year, and fever is usually caused by an infection. In a child at rest, a rectal temperature over 38.0 °C is a fever. A feverish child who is confused, drowsy or unusually unwell must be taken to a doctor.

People take a child to a paediatrician for example for a long-lasting fever, ear pain, respiratory symptoms, eczema or a concern about growth and development.
