When to have tartar removed?

Tartar is hardened plaque that cannot be brushed off at home. A dental hygienist or dentist usually removes it with an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments. Regular removal prevents gum disease such as periodontitis.

Kela reimburses up to two dental hygienist visits a year without a dentist's referral; with a referral, more visits can be reimbursed.

People go for tartar removal for example for bleeding gums, bad breath, visible tartar or on a dentist's recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kela reimburse part of the price?

Kela reimburses part of the cost of private healthcare. After the Kela reimbursement the cheapest price in the comparison is €111.00. The reimbursement is often deducted from the bill directly when you show your Kela card.

Do I need a dentist's referral to see a hygienist?

No. Without a referral Kela reimburses up to two hygienist visits a year.

How often should tartar be removed?

It depends on how quickly tartar builds up. The hygienist or dentist assesses a suitable interval.
