When to see an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist examines the health of the eyes and treats eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and eye infections. The examination includes measuring eye pressure and checking the back of the eye when needed.

More than 90,000 people in Finland have glaucoma, and it is often completely symptom-free at first. If glaucoma runs in the family, an eye examination every five years from the age of 40 is recommended.

People see an ophthalmologist for example for weakening or blurred vision, visual disturbances, an eye pressure check or long-lasting redness of the eye.
