When to see an orthopaedist?
An orthopaedist is a doctor specialised in surgery of the musculoskeletal system. They examine joint, bone and tendon problems and assess whether imaging is needed and whether the problem is treated with exercise, medication or surgery.
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in the world, most often in the knees, hips, finger joints and spine. Exercise is the basis of treatment; joint replacement is considered when pain cannot be controlled otherwise.
People see an orthopaedist for example for knee, shoulder or hip pain, a sports injury, symptoms of osteoarthritis or to assess the need for surgery.
